Artist Biography

 

Liang Qing Kichi, painter and New York fashion designer. Expert member of the New York-based RIVAA Art Association.

 

His works are held in the collections of such institutions as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Bid Committee, the National Museum, the Library of Congress, the Office of the First Lady of the United States, the Los Angeles City Hall, East Tennessee State University, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and the Korea Culture and Arts Research Institute, as well as by Wall Street financiers and prominent political figures in Europe and the United States. He has been awarded the title of Outstanding Chinese American and was conferred the honorary title of Lifetime Honorary Citizen by the City of Los Angeles.

 

Over his more than forty-year artistic career, Liang Qing (Kichi) has held dozens of solo exhibitions in China as well as in European and American countries including France, Germany, and the United States. His works have been featured in numerous international group shows and art fairs, and he has received many prestigious national and international awards in the fields of art, including gold and silver prizes from Europe and the United States, as well as from China, Japan, and South Korea.

We are grateful for the warm invitation from Zhengyatang. Despite the recurring challenges posed by the pandemic, “Why Do I Dwell Amid Verdant Hills—Liang Qing’s 2022 Zhengyatang Chinese Painting Exhibition” is set to open smoothly this Saturday.
The title of this exhibition, “What Meaning Dwells in the Verdant Hills,” was inscribed by the artist herself, drawing from Li Bai’s poem “Questions Asked in the Mountains”: “Ask me why I dwell amid the green hills; I smile and say naught, my heart at ease. The peach blossoms and flowing water drift away into the distant haze—another world, not of this mortal realm.” This poem aptly captures the painter Liang Qing’s current state of mind: serene and unassuming—qualities that both define her outlook on life and shape her artistic style. Her work eschews showy virtuosity and sensationalism; while adhering to established conventions, it simultaneously honors tradition, embraces innovation, and assimilates foreign techniques for her own purposes. Her paintings display a mature, incisive brushwork—precise, poised, and yet supple and harmonious, exuding an elegant, consummate grace.

This exhibition features fifty-six exquisite Chinese paintings, most of which are the artist’s recent works. The collection continues Liang Qing’s signature style, with a rich variety of subjects—landscape, flowers and birds, and figures—and a diverse range of techniques, including meticulous brushwork, freehand ink, and realistic rendering, all represented by outstanding pieces.
Liang Qing’s traditional Chinese painting draws on the Song and Yuan traditions while incorporating the strengths of contemporary and modern masters. She emphasizes both the expressive charm of brush and ink and the compositional principles of color, resulting in works that are rich in subject matter and diverse in style. At the same time, she seamlessly integrates Western artistic concepts and techniques into her Chinese‑style paintings, boldly innovating in composition and color harmony to produce pieces marked by a distinct personal voice. Flowers, still lifes, picturesque landscapes, and figures all find their place in her oeuvre, as she captures fleeting moments of beauty through the medium of painting.

“Do not take ink-and-brush art lightly; in its silent poetry, a thousand autumns are celebrated.” Liang Qing’s artistic practice underscores that painting is a medium for expressing the artist’s thoughts and emotions. As this essay draws to a close, I would like to invoke Xu Wei’s verse to encapsulate the core of Liang Qing’s painterly philosophy—indeed, a defining feature of her art.

Liang Qing Kichi’s oil paintings bear the unmistakable imprint of rigorous training in the Western tradition, while also reflecting the influence of China’s traditional painting—its early education and hands‑on practice—and simultaneously embracing the zeitgeist of European and American modern art and contemporary fashion. Her works burst with vibrant, unrestrained color yet avoid vulgar exaggeration, conveying to the viewer a compelling sense of passion and sincerity, suffused with aesthetic beauty. Technically, she displays remarkable versatility: adeptly wielding time‑honored Western techniques and methods, she nonetheless remains unbound by convention, subtly evoking the traces and sensibilities of Eastern painting. Her approach is bold, with sharply defined layers that maintain a poised, composed equilibrium. In terms of conception, her work is deeply personal, rich with intellectual depth and narrative complexity; its allure and perceptiveness are striking, revealing an artistic personality that is at once serene and steady, yet boldly expansive.

• In 1994, the work “Chrysan the Mums with Fence” was selected for the 55th International Art Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and received the Gold Prize.

• In 1994, the work “The Voice from the Mountain” was selected for the Seoul International Biennale of Asia and acquired by the Korean Cultural Arts Research Institute.

• In 1994, the work was invited to participate in the China Art Expo.

• In 1996, a painting exhibition titled “Paintings of Blue” was held in Munich, Germany.

• In 1998, the work “Goddess in the Wind” won the Gold Award at the inaugural Star Cup National Calligraphy and Painting Competition.
