What Does It Mean to Dwell in the Azure Mountains—An Exhibition of Liang Qing’s Artworks (Opening Chapter)

On November 26, the exhibition “He Yi Qi Bi Shan—An Art Exhibition by Liang Qing” opened at Taihe Law Firm, showcasing fifty-six works by the artist Liang Qing. The atmosphere was vibrant, with a distinguished crowd and an abundance of esteemed guests.

 

This art exhibition is co‑hosted by the Jiangsu Provincial Association for Sino‑Foreign Social and Cultural Exchange, the Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Enterprises, and the Jiangsu Provincial Entrepreneurs Association, in collaboration with United Taihe Law Firm, and is organized by the Nanjing Zhengyatang Art Museum. It also receives support from the Jiangsu “Belt and Road” International Legal Services Alliance, the Cultural and Arts Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial Overseas Chinese Association, the U.S.-based KICHI International Center for Culture and Arts, the Jiangsu Provincial General Store of Cultural Relics, the Xinhua All‑Media Art Museum, the Nanjing Shichao Art Museum, the Suzhou Xu Beihong Art Museum, the Twenty‑Four Hours Art Museum, and the Nanjing Yao Art Museum, among others.

Mr. Ma Yue, Secretary-General of the Jiangsu Provincial Association for Sino-Foreign Social and Cultural Exchange, introduced the guests in attendance.
 

Mr. Li Kun, former Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial State-owned Assets Management Committee and First‑level Inspector, now serving as President of the Jiangsu Enterprise Federation, delivered a speech. The Zhengyatang Art Museum has provided artists with an excellent platform for showcasing their work, and he extended his best wishes for the exhibition’s complete success.

 

Mr. Wang Ningsheng, former Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial State-owned Assets Management Commission and a First‑Level Inspector, delivered a speech. The artist Liang Qing’s work combines the solid foundation of Western painting with the meticulous yet free‑hand style of traditional Chinese meticulous brushwork, achieving a natural fusion of Eastern and Western artistic traditions and exhibiting a highly distinctive personal artistic voice.

 

At the opening of this art exhibition, Director Xu Guojin of Taihe Law Firm delivered a welcoming address. Director Xu extended a warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude to all the guests in attendance, and also expressed sincere appreciation to the organizers and co-organizers for their generous support. Since 2016, Taihe Gallery has hosted more than ten exhibitions, each featuring works by renowned calligraphers and painters, and earning significant acclaim within the industry.

 

Zhu Li, director of the Zhengya Tang Gallery in Nanjing, delivered a speech. She expressed great joy at gathering with everyone and noted that this exhibition is especially honored to welcome the artist Liang Qing, whose… The artist’s work bears the unmistakable imprint of rigorous training in Western traditional painting, while also reflecting the influence of China’s classical painting tradition—its initiation and practice. Her palette is vibrant and exuberant, yet never vulgar or overblown, conveying to the viewer a compelling sense of passion and sincerity, suffused with aesthetic beauty.

 

Mr. Li Zhaobin, a former professor at the PLA Naval Command Academy, was also the only post‑1990s individual in his nineties present at the event. Mr. Li remarked that this exhibition of Liang Qing’s artworks had offered him a true feast for the senses, and he hopes that everyone will be able to savor it and derive some benefit.

 

Mr. Li Qi, former Vice Mayor of Nanjing and current President of the Nanjing Enterprise Federation and the Nanjing Entrepreneurs Association, remarked that Liang Qing’s works are both tender and robust, exhibiting remarkable finesse. As a city renowned for its rich history and culture, Nanjing aspires to see more artists like Teacher Liang Qing emerge. He also expressed hope that the art exhibition at Zhengyatang would receive extensive publicity and outreach, reaching a wider audience.

 

Mr. Si Jinquan, former Deputy Minister of the Publicity Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Director of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Congress, stated that promoting Chinese culture—of which calligraphy and painting are an essential component—embodies noble ideals and moral principles, as well as a profound cultural and artistic heritage. He expressed his sincere hope that this exhibition will generate an even broader impact.

 

Mr. Zhao Minqiang, a second-level inspector at the former Provincial Party History Office, stated that Teacher Liang Qing is an artist he has known for many years and that he holds his artistic works in high regard. The works featured in this exhibition exhibit new characteristics and a heightened level of sophistication; going forward, he will continue to follow, study, and appreciate them as always.

 

Mr. Wang Dongwei, General Manager of the Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics General Store, stated that Liang Qing’s artistic works uphold traditional principles while embracing innovation; his compositions, layouts, and use of cursive‑regular script all reflect a profound inheritance of the past. His paintings seamlessly integrate the sentiments of Tang poetry and Song lyrics, and his meticulous approach to seal carving reveals a deep cultural foundation, earning him great respect.

 

Mr. Ruan Lirong, Dean of the School of Arts at Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology, expressed his great honor in participating in this art exhibition. Art, by its very nature, is an expression of emotion; each individual possesses a unique emotional perspective, which evolves through psychological experiences and life’s journey. The artistic works of Teacher Liang Qing presented at this show are truly refreshing and inspiring.

 

 

Ms. Wang Xiaolan, director of the Nanjing 24-Hour Art Museum, stated that Liang Qing’s work both honors tradition and embraces innovation, while also drawing on foreign techniques to enrich his own practice. She expressed hope for more opportunities for artistic exchange and collaboration in the future.

 

Guests delivered remarks, and the atmosphere at the scene was lively.
 

Qiu Zhongwen, former Director of the Jiangsu Provincial State‑Owned Assets Management Committee and Secretary‑General of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Congress, remarked that through decades of dedicated practice and refinement, artist Liang Qing has captured both the essence of art and the passage of time. The experience of viewing his work is a true feast for the senses; whether depicting landscapes, figures, or flowers and birds—whether in close‑up, mid‑range, or distant views—the compositions are impeccably balanced. The masterful interplay of ink and wash underscores the artist’s profound technical mastery, while his oeuvre, which bridges Eastern and Western traditions, exudes a fresh, elegant simplicity.

 

Artist Liang Qing delivered a thank-you speech, noting that, as a descendant of the Qi School, his roots in Chinese painting run deeper than those in oil painting. Liang Qing believes that whether it is oil painting or traditional Chinese ink painting, the emotional power and technical mastery of art remain fundamentally the same. Having studied painting from an early age—copying model scripts at the age of five—he was selected by the state in 1978 to study in France on an exchange program, graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris in its class of 1989. In the United States, Liang Qing works as an art designer, a profession that sustains him. Yet art has always been the vocation of his heart; he expressed gratitude to the organizers and co-organizers for their dedicated support of this exhibition.

 

Ms. Liang Qing presented a painting to Taihe Law Firm, and Mr. Ma Qun accepted it, on behalf of the firm, presenting Ms. Liang Qing with a certificate of collection.

Artist Biography

Liang Qing Kichi, painter and New York fashion designer. Expert member of the New York–based RIVAA Art Association.

His works are held in the collections of such institutions as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Bid Committee, the National Museum, the Library of Congress, the Office of the First Lady of the United States, the Los Angeles City Hall, East Tennessee State University, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and the Korea Culture and Arts Research Institute, as well as by Wall Street financiers and prominent political and cultural figures in Europe and the United States. He has been honored with the title of Outstanding Chinese American and was awarded the Lifetime Honorary Citizen designation by the City of Los Angeles.

Over a career spanning more than forty years, Liang Qing (Kichi) has held dozens of solo exhibitions in China as well as in European and American countries including France, Germany, and the United States. His works have been featured in numerous international group shows and art fairs, and he has received many prestigious national and international awards in the fields of art, including gold and silver prizes from Europe and the United States, as well as from China, Japan, and South Korea.

 

Artistic Experience and Awards Received

• In 1994, the work “Chrysan the Mums with Fence” was selected for the 55th International Art Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Japan and received the Gold Prize.

• In 1994, the work “The Voice from the Mountain” was selected for the Seoul International Biennale of Asia and acquired by the Korean Cultural Arts Research Institute.

• In 1994, the work was invited to participate in the China Art Expo.

• In 1996, a painting exhibition titled “Paintings of Blue” was held in Munich, Germany.

• In 1998, the work “Goddess in the Wind” was awarded the Gold Prize at the inaugural Star Cup National Calligraphy and Painting Competition.

• In 1999, at the invitation of the City of Los Angeles, he held a solo exhibition titled “The First Ray of Sunshine—Kichi’s Art” at City Hall, receiving acclaim from the art community as well as political and business circles. The artist has received widespread acclaim, with their works eagerly acquired by collectors. They have also been honored with the “Lifetime Honorary Citizen” title from the City of Los Angeles.

• In 2000, the works “Sunflower Under the Sunshine” and “The Corner of the Library” were acquired by the Office of the First Lady of the United States and were awarded that year. Awarded the title of “Outstanding Chinese American.”

• In 2001, to support Beijing’s bid for the Olympic Games, he donated his work “Morning Light” to the Beijing 2008 International Olympic Committee Bid Committee, and at the same time accepted an interview with People’s Daily and China Central Television.
