What Does It Mean to Dwell in the Azure Mountains—An Exhibition of Liang Qing’s Artworks (Viewing Notes)

On November 29, Qu Chao and Xu Donghai, Deputy Directors of the United Front Work Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee, along with Zhang Yan from the Research Office, paid a visit to Taihe Law Firm— an honorary vice‑presidential unit of the Jiangsu Overseas Friendship Association. They were accompanied by Ma Qun, Chairman of the Jiangsu “Belt and Road” International Legal Services Alliance and Chief Partner of Taihe; Li Yuanyang, Director of the Taihe Management Committee; and Zhu Li, Director of the Taihe Executive Committee, who guided them on a tour of the exhibition “Zhengyatang 2022: He Yi Qi Bi Shan—An Art Exhibition by Liang Qing.”
This art exhibition is co‑hosted by the Jiangsu Provincial Association for Sino‑Foreign Social and Cultural Exchange, the Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Enterprises, and the Jiangsu Provincial Entrepreneurs Association, in collaboration with United Taihe Law Firm, and is organized by the Nanjing Zhengyatang Art Museum. It also enjoys the support of the Jiangsu “Belt and Road” International Legal Services Alliance, the Cultural and Arts Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial Overseas Chinese Association, the U.S.-based KICHI International Center for Culture and Arts, the Jiangsu Provincial General Store of Cultural Relics, the Xinhua All‑Media Art Museum, the Nanjing Shichao Art Museum, the Suzhou Xu Beihong Art Museum, the Twenty‑Four Hours Art Museum, and the Nanjing Yao Art Museum, among others. The exhibition runs from November 26 to December 26.
The art exhibition was guided and interpreted by the artist Liang Qing. His commentary flowed smoothly, captivating the audience. From the minutiae of each painting to the placement of its figures, he unfolded his analysis layer by layer, offering a detailed account of the compositional rationale and the choice of pigments and materials for every work—without the slightest hint of weariness. The distinguished leaders in attendance were deeply impressed by Liang Qing’s unique artistic ingenuity and his sincere artistic passion. His works eschew ostentatious virtuosity and sensationalism; while adhering to established conventions, they both honor tradition and embrace innovation. Throughout the viewing, the leaders engaged with great interest, pausing from time to time to discuss the pieces.
“What brings you to dwell in the verdant hills?” This line is drawn from Li Bai’s poem “Questions Asked in the Mountains”: “When asked why I choose to linger amid the green peaks, I smile without reply, my heart at ease. The peach blossoms and flowing water drift away into the distant haze—there lies a world apart, not of this mortal realm.” The serene simplicity and tranquil composure embodied in that poem reflect both Liang Qing’s outlook on life and the stylistic essence of her artistic practice.
This exhibition features a total of fifty-six masterful Chinese paintings. Liang Qing’s art carries forward the traditions of the Song and Yuan dynasties while drawing on the strengths of contemporary and modern masters. She emphasizes both the expressive charm of brush and ink and the compositional principles of color, resulting in works that are rich in subject matter and diverse in style. At the same time, she seamlessly integrates Western artistic concepts and techniques into her Chinese painting, boldly innovating in composition and color harmony to produce pieces marked by a distinct personal voice.

Artist Biography
Liang Qing Kichi, painter and New York fashion designer. An expert member of the RIVAA Art Association in New York. His works are held in the collections of institutions including the 2008 Beijing Olympic Bid Committee, the National Museum, the Library of Congress, the Office of the First Lady of the United States, Los Angeles City Hall, East Tennessee State University, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and the Korea Culture and Arts Research Institute, as well as by Wall Street financiers and prominent political and cultural figures in Europe and the United States. He has been honored with the title of Outstanding Chinese American and was awarded the Lifetime Honorary Citizenship by the City of Los Angeles. Over a career spanning more than forty years, Liang Qing (Kichi) has mounted dozens of solo exhibitions in China, France, Germany, the United States, and other European and American countries; his work has been featured in numerous international group shows and art fairs, and he has received many prestigious national and international awards in the arts, from Europe and the United States to China, Japan, and South Korea.
Artistic Background and Awards Received
• In 1994, the work “Chrysan the Mums with Fence” was selected for the 55th International Art Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and received the Gold Prize.
• In 1994, the work “The Voice from the Mountain” was selected for the Seoul Asia International Art Exhibition in South Korea and acquired by the Korean Cultural Arts Research Institute.
• In 1994, the work was invited to participate in the China Art Expo.
• In 1996, a painting exhibition titled “Paintings of Blue” was held in Munich, Germany.
• In 1998, the work “Goddess in the Wind” won the Gold Award at the inaugural Star Cup National Calligraphy and Painting Competition.
• In 1999, at the invitation of the City of Los Angeles, he held a solo exhibition titled “The First Ray of Sunshine—Kichi’s Art” at City Hall, receiving acclaim from the art community as well as political and business circles. The artist has received widespread acclaim, and their works have been eagerly acquired by collectors. They have also been honored with the “Lifetime Honorary Citizen” title from the City of Los Angeles.
• In 2000, the works “Sunflower Under the Sunshine” and “The Corner of the Library” were acquired by the Office of the First Lady of the United States and were awarded that year. Awarded the title of “Outstanding Chinese American.”
