In my view, for lawyers to achieve professional specialization, they must do the following: First, develop a clear self‑understanding and define their professional positioning—this encompasses both an awareness of their personality and an assessment of their capabilities. Second, based on this self‑assessment, identify a focused practice area. For instance, in 2017 our office began requiring each lawyer to select one primary and two secondary practice specialties tailored to their individual strengths, which helps young attorneys pursue specialized development at an early stage and prevents them from becoming “jack‑of‑all‑trades” practitioners. Third, continuously deepen their knowledge and expertise in their chosen field, while gaining practical experience through a substantial portfolio of projects, thereby swiftly mastering the distinctive characteristics of that specialty and rapidly establishing themselves as seasoned professionals.

Becoming a professional lawyer—whether in terms of study, the development of specialized skills, or the cultivation and accumulation of practice—is a journey that can never be undertaken too thoroughly. That’s why I don’t think it’s necessary to dwell excessively on the transitional phase. Many accomplished lawyers who have been practicing for years remain diligent and committed; even after decades in the profession, they are still regarded by others as fully seasoned experts, yet they never stop striving to refine their craft further.

The Analects of Confucius As the saying goes, “At thirty, one stands office.” In the world of law, there is no eternal haven—only a sailing ship that must constantly brave the waves. Amid uncertainty, we reinvent professional value; independence brings not merely pressure, but also a key that unlocks new dimensions in our careers. At the age of thirty, I chose to shed the “safety armor” of salaried counsel and set sail once more as an independent lawyer. Behind this decision lie countless late-night reflections at my desk, the accumulated lessons of both victories and defeats, and, above all, a return to the very essence of the legal profession. As Socrates taught, “Wisdom begins with definition,” and my definition is this: the true jurist must ultimately steer the ship of their own destiny alone.
In the past, Han Yu remarked: “In ancient times, those who sought learning invariably had a teacher; a teacher’s role is to transmit the Way, impart knowledge, and resolve doubts.” I am deeply grateful for JC Master Law Office’s open and inclusive platform for growth, which, like the Academy of Athens in ancient Greece, affords every legal professional the opportunity to awaken through vigorous intellectual exchange.
