Taihe “Mottled Rich Colors” Art Exhibition
▲ Zhou Jun’s work “Echoes of the Han and Tang Dynasties”
The Dunhuang murals are renowned worldwide for their rich colors and distinctive artistic style. “Mottled Rich Pigments” draws inspiration from these murals, inheriting the aesthetic spirit and expressive forms of ancient mural art while breaking away from the traditional fusion of line and watercolor washes. It has developed a unique charm by combining linear drawing with boldly mottled color patches. The works exude a simple, archaic elegance—figurative yet vivid—evoking a beauty that feels almost natural.
At the Taihe Spring Art Exhibition, Teacher Zhou Jun will take us on a journey to Dunhuang, where we’ll experience the artistic allure of its “mottled, richly colored” masterpieces.
Zhou Jun, known by his art name Wushi, is a humble scholar from the Eastern Hills and a native of Nanjing, with ancestral roots in Yixing, Jiangsu. From an early age, he devoted himself to painting; in 1986, he was admitted to the Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Chinese Painting, where he studied under the renowned master Chang Jin. There, he immersed himself in the study of landscape painting, coming to appreciate the carefree yet enduring human spirit and ink‑rich charm that characterize literati painting. Deeply passionate about art, Teacher Zhou’s work springs forth from genuine inspiration and fervent enthusiasm. After spending several years copying and studying at Dunhuang, he came to grasp its profound essence and developed his own distinctive “mottled, rich‑color” technique—boldly innovative, yielding works that appear time‑worn and antique while brimming with lively artistic interest.
