JC Master: A Lawyer’s Story | A Growth Journal of an ISTJ Attorney

“Choose your specialty wisely, and you’ll outperform the college entrance exam every year”—this is both a widely quoted maxim in the legal profession and a sentiment I have deeply felt since becoming a trainee lawyer and, later, a practicing attorney. On the one hand, the continual evolution of laws and regulations compels us to keep our knowledge up to date, striving to identify the most effective solutions for our clients within the framework of current law. On the other hand, the workload often piles up: for instance, multiple court cases may need to be advanced concurrently, while on-site legal due diligence requires promptly addressing the needs of parties involved in other matters.
 

In the stillness of late night, beneath the glow of overtime work, I often fall into contemplation: Is it truly possible, with such all‑out effort, to light the way forward for others? And is this sacrifice really worth it? Yet I always recall the moment, after a mediation, when the party involved looked up and said she believed women should be like us—her eyes shining with the resolve to turn the page on the past and embrace a new life. I also remember the sense of clarity and joy that washed over me after untangling the intricate history and equity‑transfer process of a particular company. And then there was the earnestness and deep remorse in the eyes of a criminal defendant, no older than myself, as he pledged to the judge and prosecutor that he would strive to become a good father and a responsible citizen.
 

Looking back as I alternate between Word and Excel, I see how far I’ve come—from the initial chaos of entering the workforce to now confidently managing cases on my own. The old statutes I’ve pored over, the case files brimming with annotations, and the courtroom transcripts I’ve painstakingly typed—each has quietly paved the way for my growth over the past two years.
 

As a newly practicing attorney, I have yet to handle a landmark case that turns the tide or deliver a dazzling courtroom argument. Yet, through countless nights spent hunched over my desk, I have come to realize that the true value of our profession lies in those meticulous extra checks we insist on when others would settle for “good enough.” The warmth of a legal professional shines through in every clear, careful word we use to lay out potential risks—even when a client feels no further explanation is needed. And as for growth, it is the gradual transformation of seemingly “insignificant” acts of perseverance into marks of trustworthiness in the eyes of others. This, for an ISTJ‑type lawyer, is the most sincere expression of what it means to be truly professional.
