JC Master: A Lawyer’s Story | From Ambitious Aspirations to Steadfast Practice and Far-reaching Success — Reflections on an Internship as a Young Attorney

Hello everyone, my name is Hao Xin. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting and Hosting Arts from Southwest University, and later pursued a master’s degree in Law (non-law background) at Soochow University, having switched fields during my graduate studies. I am now honored to join JC Master Law Office and begin my internship.

The First Lesson Beyond the Ivory Tower

Four years of media studies and hands-on experience at the undergraduate level have equipped me with clear logical reasoning and strong communication skills, giving me a distinct edge in public speaking, information synthesis, and cross‑team collaboration. My decision to transition from the arts to law stems from a deep commitment to fairness and justice, as well as an enduring passion for understanding the intricate workings of social norms. During my graduate studies at Soochow University, I systematically restructured my legal knowledge base and, through practical experiences such as moot court competitions and pro bono legal work, further honed my abilities in legal drafting, case analysis, and dispute resolution. As I stepped out of Soochow University’s School of Law, I carried with me a confident mastery of statutory texts—yet during my very first week at a Nanjing law office, reality delivered a sobering lesson. When my supervising attorney handed me the file of a lease‑contract dispute, dozens of pages of WeChat chat logs and audio recordings instantly revealed what it means to grapple with the “dust of legal facts.” It became clear that behind the courtroom’s forceful arguments lies countless late nights of painstaking effort. These small but profoundly real everyday realities taught me that the “rights‑based analytical framework” I had studied on campus is merely the skeleton of the legal profession; it is the meticulous details of practice that breathe life into its flesh and spirit.

A Firsthand Experience of Practicing at a Law Office

As an intern lawyer at JC Master Law Office, I am actively engaged in case discussions, legal research, and the drafting of basic legal documents, striving to translate theoretical knowledge into practical skills. At a certain moment, I came to realize that the pursuit of justice requires not only legal reasoning but also the patience to “bend down and gather the fallen ears of grain.” Only when I saw the civil complaint I had drafted being presented in court by my supervising attorney did I truly appreciate the significance of using the law to safeguard my clients’ legitimate rights. Looking ahead, I hope to maintain precision in my legal writing while learning to convey professional value with greater empathy, leveraging both expertise and passion to create added value for my team and our clients.

New Expectations for the Future

That day, after finishing overtime and stepping out of the law office, Nanjing was bathed in the faint fragrance of osmanthus, with the autumn rain just beginning to ease. It felt as though I were recalling the little girl who, back then at Soochow University’s Lingyun Building, had vowed: “To establish a heart for Heaven and Earth, to secure a destiny for the people, to carry on the learning of the sages of old, and to usher in lasting peace for all generations.” From campus to the law office, from theory to practice, what has changed is the lens through which we view the world; what remains constant is our unwavering faith in fairness and justice. I am grateful for the legacy passed down by the senior colleagues of this office—those who “hold up the lamp to guide others”—and I look forward to joining more fellow practitioners in writing, amidst the vast expanse of the legal profession, the chapter that belongs to our generation of jurists.
