Just now, as I stood at the defense table in the criminal courtroom, I reached to adjust the badge on my chest—only to feel the crisp fabric of my suit. For a moment, I was disoriented; habits forged over ten years, day in and day out, are not so easily shed. Transitioning from an on‑the‑frontline investigating detective to a criminal defense attorney has not only reshaped my professional path but has also redefined my understanding of the very essence of the law.

The transition of roles brings not only a shift in one’s professional trajectory but also the piecing together of a legal professional’s comprehensive cognitive framework. Even as the judge strikes the gavel, I still instinctively straighten my back—this occupational habit, inherited from my days in the police force, may well be the finest legacy of my faith in the rule of law. In the stillness of the night, beneath the glow of overtime lights, I often find myself lost in thought: Is it truly possible, despite all our efforts, to light the way forward for others? And is such dedication really worth it? Yet I can never forget the look in a party’s eyes after a mediation—she looked up and said she believed women should be like us—and the radiant spark that lit her gaze as she prepared to turn the page on her past and embrace a new life. Nor can I forget the sense of relief and joy that washed over me after untangling the intricate history and equity‑transfer process of a company. And I remember, too, the earnestness and deep remorse in the eyes of a criminal defendant, no older than I, as he pledged to the judge and prosecutor that he would strive to become a good father and a responsible citizen.

It was nearly dawn when I finished revising the client’s documents. Gazing at my reflection in the window, I recalled a day from a few years ago—when I, too, was buried beneath piles of books, tirelessly poring over case‑study reports for my university courses under the glow of a lamp. Back then, my state of mind was remarkably pure: my classmates and I were deeply engrossed in lively discussions of legal theory and diverse perspectives, driven by a shared passion to unearth treasures along the shores of jurisprudence.
And JC Master is just such a golden shore. During meal breaks, my colleagues share their insights from handling cases, and at case‑discussion meetings, we engage in lively exchanges of ideas.
