JC Master Updates | Director Ma Qun, Chief Partner of JC Master, and his delegation paid a special visit to Attorney General Wang Yang, a legal luminary in his nineties.

　　Recently, Director Ma Qun, Chief Partner of JC Master Law Office, together with Li Yuanyang, Director of the Management Committee, paid a special visit to Senior Attorney Wang Yang, a firsthand witness to the development of the rule of law in New China and a towering figure in the Chinese legal profession.

　　The year 2026 coincides with the Year of the Horse. At 96 years old, Mr. Wang remains in robust health and enjoys sharp mental acuity, making him one of the few senior lawyers in China who have enjoyed both longevity and vitality. He is also a firsthand participant and witness to the development of the legal profession in New China. This visit was both a gesture of respect from younger generations and a valuable opportunity to collect an oral history. At the behest of Attorney Xu Jian, Chairman of the China Lawyers Museum, the JC Master team traveled specifically to document this chapter of the profession’s memory for the museum.

　　Passing on the flame

　　Director Ma Qun shares a deep mentor–student bond with Elder Wang. Director Ma warmly inquired after Elder Wang’s health and outlined JC Master’s recent developments. Elder Wang expressed great satisfaction at JC Master’s progress, urging the younger generation to remain steadfast in their commitment to the rule of law and to boldly pursue pioneering innovation.

　　Director Ma Qun stated: “At the request of Chairman Xu Jian, I am here today to pay a visit to Senior Attorney Wang Yang, asking him to share his insights and reflect on the evolution and development of the legal profession in the People’s Republic of China.”

　 　Oral history

　　As a deputy to the Eighth National People’s Congress, a director of the All China Lawyers Association during its first and second terms and concurrently the chair of its Non-Litigation Legal Affairs Committee, a government counselor to the Jiangsu Provincial Government, and a member of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial Political Consultative Conference, Mr. Wang was among the earliest lawyers in China to be awarded the first‑level qualification and took part in drafting the People’s Republic of China’s first Provisional Regulations on Lawyers.

　　During the interview, Elder Wang recounted his personal history, with a firsthand witness narrating the evolution of the Chinese legal profession. He recalled the restoration of the legal system, discussed the pioneering of non-litigation practice, and reflected on the art of mentorship and the passing down of knowledge from master to apprentice.

　 　Cherishing Memories

　　The entire interview was recorded on video and will be archived in the Oral History Collection of the China Lawyers Museum. Old Master Wang shared numerous stories about the development of the Chinese legal profession—accounts that remain largely unknown to younger lawyers. He is not only a firsthand participant and witness to this history but also a visionary leader and a key contributor.
