JC Master: A Lawyer’s Story | Piercing the Fog to Find the Way, Never Ceasing to Seek

My years of study at the Law School of Hunan Normal University marked the beginning of my legal journey. Nestled at the foot of Yuelu Mountain, the campus is steeped in the profound traditions of legal scholarship yet suffused with the free spirit of humanistic thought. The rigorous intellectual debates in class, the quiet contemplation in the library, and the spirited exchanges in the mock courtroom all gradually shaped my understanding of and respect for the law. At the same time, to broaden my future career options, I pursued a minor in chemistry during my undergraduate studies, gaining a solid grasp of the foundational theories of intellectual property law and practical skills in patent agency.
 

After graduation, driven by a passion for the legal profession and a desire to explore the field of intellectual property, I joined a well-established IP agency in Suzhou. Over the course of a year and a half, I devoted myself wholeheartedly to core tasks such as drafting patent search reports, conducting in-depth analyses of technical solutions, and identifying potential patent‑related risks. Each day, I immersed myself in vast repositories of technical literature and patent databases, systematically honing my expertise in patent searching and analysis. It was during this period of focused, meticulous work that I developed a comprehensive understanding of the IP landscape—laying the most solid foundation for my subsequent career as a lawyer. I came to realize that intellectual property is not merely a set of cold legal provisions; it is the “armor” that safeguards innovation. Every precise search and every thorough analysis contributes to strengthening that protective shield.
 

Driven by a passion for legal practice, I leveraged my dual credentials—the Legal Professional Qualification Certificate and the Patent Attorney License—to join JC Master Law Office, becoming a member of its Suzhou branch’s intellectual property team. As an intern lawyer, I officially embarked on my legal career. Within the team, I began with patent drafting and gradually expanded my experience to include patent portfolio management, patent invalidation, patent litigation, and corporate IP compliance. I also witnessed the full legal lifecycle of numerous technologies: from refining isolated technical ideas into comprehensive solutions, through filing patent applications and securing patent rights, to navigating downstream dispute‑resolution stages such as invalidation challenges and infringement litigation. Toward the end of my internship, I took on more substantive roles in handling patent litigation cases. Starting with assisting the team in organizing evidence and comparing technical features, I later contributed to drafting legal documents and participating in courtroom proceedings and evidentiary examinations—each step proving immensely rewarding.
 

To gain exposure to a diverse range of practice areas and enhance my overall professional capabilities, I joined the team led by Attorney Chen Xinnian. Drawing on his many years of legal experience, Attorney Chen provided highly targeted career guidance, enabling me to handle a broader array of cases and fully leverage the unique advantages of my interdisciplinary background in intellectual property and chemistry. To date, I have been deeply involved in a wide spectrum of matters, including labor arbitration, workers’ compensation disputes, lawsuits concerning shareholders’ right to information, disputes over capital contributions, derivative actions, and enforcement proceedings for judgments and rulings. I have actively participated in evidence organization, drafting legal documents, assisting during court hearings, and facilitating mediation and negotiation, resulting in a systematic enhancement of my professional skills. The rigorous logical framework and meticulous writing style I developed while preparing patent applications have become an essential foundation for my current practice across various types of cases.
 

Frost is in “The Road Not Taken” It reads, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I—oh, I could not travel both.” Since beginning my career, though I have faced one choice after another and often felt uncertain, those regrets over paths left unchosen, as well as the deliberate steps I’ve taken, have all been explorations at life’s crossroads—helping me correct course and draw ever closer to the destination my heart longs for. There are no shortcuts to professional growth; every step of deep, dedicated effort counts, and every original aspiration is precious. Today, armed with this steadfast resolve and courage, I will press forward with confidence on the path of law, setting out toward a future brimming with boundless possibilities.
