When India is mentioned, or when people who have visited the country—indeed, even some Indian citizens themselves—often assume that its rule-of-law system is underdeveloped and that money can buy just about anything. But this is far from the truth:
In 2018–2019, I undertook an exchange program and worked at a law office in India. Like many domestic clients, I typically entered India on a business visa, and my salary was not paid in India. However, since I joined a locally based Indian law office, the hiring process was quite stringent. Accordingly, I submitted the required documents in China and applied for an Indian work visa.
The initial validity of an Indian work visa is typically 180 days. With a work visa, entering India is generally straightforward; however, ensuring compliance and navigating the associated administrative procedures has presented me with considerable challenges.

From defining the business model to structuring the transaction, from whether to use “reasonable endeavors” or “best endeavors” in confidentiality obligations, to the meticulous drafting of representations and warranties—whether to include a “to the seller’s knowledge” qualifier—every detail matters. From a two-page term sheet to hundreds of pages of complex, opaque transaction documents, and countless sleepless nights, it all feels like yesterday. “To offer a client a glass of water, you must first have a bucket yourself.” A common tongue‑in‑cheek saying in the legal profession goes: “Choose the right specialty, and you’ll be taking the bar exam every day.” In an era when laws are constantly evolving, only by maintaining an open‑minded, “empty‑cup” mindset—continuously absorbing new knowledge and honing one’s skills—can lawyers better serve their cases and their clients.
Young lawyers are but tender seedlings, yet it is precisely such young shoots that brim with boundless vitality and potential. In today’s legal landscape—where the number of lawyers has grown exponentially and competition in the legal profession is fierce—it is difficult for young attorneys to break through the existing paradigm if they rely solely on traditional litigation practice. As marketization and globalization deepen, socio‑economic development unfolds at an ever‑faster pace, giving rise to numerous emerging areas of practice. In my view, as a young lawyer, one should stay attuned to these trends, align them with one’s own strengths, and continually explore and cultivate new fields. I hope that, one day, I too will be able to leverage my linguistic expertise to carve out a niche in areas of particular interest to me—such as international law—and gradually embark on a path toward professional specialization.
Joining JC Master, this great platform, has further strengthened my resolve to become a lawyer and deepened my understanding of the social responsibilities that come with the profession, motivating me to hold myself to even higher standards going forward. Throughout my journey of growth, I am bound to encounter various challenges and setbacks, but I officely believe that as long as I stay true to my original aspirations, maintain composure, and keep faith in myself, I will surely become a qualified lawyer—one whom I can take pride in and who earns the satisfaction of my clients.
