In my view, for lawyers to achieve professional specialization, they must do the following: First, develop a clear self‑understanding and define their professional positioning—this encompasses both an awareness of their personality and an assessment of their capabilities. Second, based on this self‑assessment, identify a focused practice area. For instance, in 2017 our office began requiring each lawyer to select one primary and two secondary practice areas tailored to their individual strengths, which helps young attorneys pursue specialized development at an early stage and prevents them from becoming “jack‑of‑all‑trades” practitioners. Third, continuously deepen knowledge and expertise in their chosen field, while gaining practical experience through a wide range of projects, so as to swiftly master the distinctive characteristics of that specialty and become fully qualified specialists.

The legal profession is, in fact, one fraught with uncertainty and challenges, and the development of specialization requires time and sustained effort. To begin, it is essential to identify your own areas of interest, immerse yourself in the study of relevant laws and regulations as well as case law, and master the key issues and complex points of practice, thereby building a solid foundation of knowledge and skills. Throughout this process, unwavering commitment to a specific professional focus is indispensable. Moreover, in the eyes of most clients, a truly specialized lawyer is often someone who has successfully handled numerous cases similar to their needs. Therefore, true specialization ultimately hinges on gaining practical experience—securing successful outcomes—to cultivate distinctive expertise and establish a unique professional reputation.
